The people of China began using long-handled brass pans filled with charcoal over one thousand years ago to press their silk.  Since that time, a wide variety of irons have been developed in the attempt to find a solution to the problem of how to heat an iron efficiently -- and protect both the user and the cloth against burns.

Q. I found a very nice old drop front desk at a sale recently. It appears to be in very good condition except that it is painted a hideous yellow and the texture of the paint is very rough. I have refinished a number of pieces of furniture over the years so I am no rookie but this one has me stumped.

Steins Made In Many Countries and Materials
Steins have a long history, going back to as early as the fifteenth century. Made in Germany of stoneware they served as drinking vessels. In those days they were often decorated with religious or historical scenes.
